Choosing a Journal for Federally Funded Research Online
Whether you already have a preferred journal or are deciding where to publish, new federal public access requirements may affect your options. Federal funding public access policies require that no delay is allowed between a manuscript's publication date at the journal and its appearance in its funding agency's designated repository. This requirement can conflict with publisher policies, which often require a manuscript to remain behind a subscription-only paywall for a period of time -- an embargo period -- unless authors agree to pay article processing charges (APC) for immediate open access. This class offers resources to help authors identify journals that support an affordable path to compliance.
Participants will learn how to:
- Locate and interpret funder public access policies
- Identify journals that permit immediate low- or no-cost open access
- Find Northwestern agreements that may cover or reduce APCs
- Investigate journal publishing and manuscript-sharing policies and APCs
