10 Simple Rules for Data Cleaning with Excel Online

Join us for a 90 minute crash course in data cleaning basics with Excel.

Through this workshop, participants will learn*:

  • Simple and advanced filtering
  • Creating histograms through the Data Analysis Toolpak
  • Splitting multi-valued cells and trimming whitespace
  • Data validation and custom lists

Required materials and prep:

  • Class dataset, available at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/168n0AePiTXv7enT6paP2n1LJjXjqe6YV/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=113586358271850674998&rtpof=true&sd=true. Download the file and save it as an Excel workbook (.xlsx)
  • Recommended: In the class we will show how to install the Analysis Toolpak. Feel free to try this install before class by going to File -- Options -- Add-ins in Excel (PC) and choosing the Analysis Toolpak, or Tools -- Excel Add-Ins on Mac. There are occasionally issues with installing the Toolpak, especially if you do not have administrator privileges on your machine. If this is the case, please be aware that IT will need to assist in installing the Analysis Toolpak. In class we will use it for two brief exercises: creating summary statistics and creating a histogram.
